Maqbool Fida Husain

Maqbool Fida Husain (17 September 1915 – 9 June 2011) was an Indian artist known for executing bold, vibrantly coloured narrative paintings in a modified Cubist style. He was one of the most celebrated and internationally recognised Indian artists of the 20th century. He was one of the founding members of Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group. M.F. Husain is associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. His early association with the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group used modern technique, and was inspired by the “New India” after the partition of 1947. His narrative paintings, executed in a modified Cubist style, can be caustic and funny as well as serious and sombre. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, The Ramayana, The Mahabharata, The British Raj, and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. In September 2020, his painting titled “Voices”, auctioned for a record $2.5 million.

Husain’s style was characterised by a fusion of traditional Indian themes with modernist techniques. His paintings often included figures from Hindu mythology and Indian history, and he was known for his depictions of goddesses like Durga and Saraswati. Some of his famous works include the “Bharat Mata” series and his interpretations of Indian epics. His use of symbols such as lanterns, umbrellas, and horses was deeply rooted in his subconscious and environment, reflecting his religious leanings and social background. Husain’s art also features elements from his experiences and travels, including depictions of Islamic and Hindu themes.

Husain’s first major exhibition in 1948 at the Bombay Art Society marked his entry into the mainstream art world. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. His art continues to be celebrated in books and documentaries.

In later years, he continued to create until his passing on June 9, 2011, in London. M.F. Husain’s legacy endures as a visionary artist who seamlessly blended traditional Indian themes with innovative techniques, leaving an indelible mark on modern art. M.F. Husain, often called the “Picasso of India,” is renowned for his diverse works including “Bharat Mata, Mahabharata” series, “The Last Supper,” vibrant depictions of horses, and portrayals of Mother Teresa, reflecting his ability to blend traditional themes with modern artistic techniques.
