B. Prabha

B. Prabha (1933-2001) was a pioneering Indian painter renowned for her evocative depictions of rural women and their everyday struggles. Born in Maharashtra, Prabha studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, where she initially experimented with various styles before settling on her signature themes. Her works are characterized by their elongated figures, somber tones, and minimalist backgrounds, reflecting the hardships and resilience of Indian women. Prabha was deeply influenced by the social and economic conditions of her time, using her art to raise awareness about the plight of marginalised communities. Over her career, she created over 50,000 paintings, each marked by a profound sense of empathy and social consciousness. Prabha’s contributions to Indian art have been widely recognized, making her one of the most significant female artists in modern Indian history.
