Jogen Chowdhury
Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) is a prominent Indian artist known for his expressive lines and innovative approach to figuration. Born in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh, Chowdhury graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata and later studied in Paris. His works are characterized by their fluid, sinuous lines and the use of cross-hatching to create texture and depth. Chowdhury often explores themes of human suffering, social injustice, and political turmoil, depicting figures in distorted, almost surreal forms that convey a sense of anxiety and tension. His distinctive style, blending traditional Indian motifs with modernist influences, has earned him widespread recognition. Chowdhury’s contributions to Indian art extend beyond his paintings; he has also played a significant role as a curator, educator, and writer, shaping the discourse around contemporary Indian art.
