Asit Kumar Haldar (1890-1964) was an eminent Indian painter, known for his versatile style and contributions to the Bengal School of Art. A descendant of the illustrious artist Raja Ravi Varma, Haldar was trained under the tutelage of Abanindranath Tagore at the Government School of Art in Calcutta. His works reflect a blend of classical Indian art traditions and modernist influences, with themes ranging from mythology and history to everyday life. Haldar was also an accomplished muralist and illustrator, and his travels to Southeast Asia enriched his artistic vision, incorporating elements from Javanese and Balinese art. Apart from his contributions to painting, Haldar was a dedicated educator, serving as the principal of the Kala Bhavana at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. His artistic oeuvre and pedagogical efforts significantly impacted the Indian art scene, promoting a synthesis of cultural heritage and contemporary artistic practices.
