Vasudeo S. Gaitonde

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (1924-2001) was a pioneering Indian abstract painter, celebrated for his non-representational art that conveyed a sense of tranquility and meditative depth. Born in Nagpur, Gaitonde studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. He was associated with the Progressive Artists’ Group, though his work stood apart due to its abstract nature. Gaitonde’s paintings are characterized by their meticulous layering of pigments, creating luminous and textured surfaces. He was heavily influenced by Zen philosophy and Indian spiritual traditions, which is evident in the contemplative quality of his art. Gaitonde was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 1971 and had several solo exhibitions in India and abroad. His works have gained immense recognition posthumously, setting record prices at auctions and cementing his legacy as a master of modern Indian art.
