Sudarsan Pattnaik, born on April 15, 1977, in Puri, Odisha, is a self-taught, celebrated Indian sand artist known for his intricate and socially impactful sand sculptures. Despite growing up in a modest family and facing financial challenges, Pattnaik pursued his passion for sand art, drawing inspiration from nature, religion and current events. His work stands out for its realism, detail, and ability to address global issues like climate change, wildlife conservation, and humanitarian crises. Among his many accolades, Pattnaik has earned the Padma Shri in 2014, one of India’s highest civilian honors, and the prestigious Golden Sand Master Award in 2024.

Pattnaik’s sand art career, spanning over 65 global events, has earned him major awards like the Italian Sand Art Award and a Moscow Gold Medal. He holds records for his sculptures, including the largest Santa Claus, and is known for works featuring Lord Jagannath, Gandhi and themes of peace and the environment.

In addition to sand art, Pattnaik has explored painting, blending sand with traditional methods to create unique mixed-media works. He also founded the Sudarsan Sand Art Institute in Puri to mentor young artists. His biography is one of perseverance and self-belief, inspiring a new generation of artists.
