About The Artist

Born in the village of Adhanga in Odisha in 1976, artist Gopal Samantray completed his B.F.A and M.F.A from the B.K College of Art, Odisha, in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Passionate about colours and the natural environment, his paintings are an illustration of the ill-effects of industrial development on the environment. Eliciting a thought-provoking dialogue with the viewer, Samantray has embarked upon a journey, not as an activist or ecologist but as a responsible artist creating a world that reminds of the losing components, addressing alarming issues such as global warming, deforestation and encroachment over the natural habitat for animals and birds. The artist, who spent his formative years in the pristine forests of Odisha, was drawn to nature and wildlife all through his life, and this reflects in his art as well. Through his brilliant depictions of displaced animals and creating surreal spaces for the animals to inhabit, he highlights humankind’s sheer apathy, greed and indifference towards nature and other living beings. Gopal Samantray’s striking artworks have been displayed at numerous group and solo shows across India. His works have also been showcased at the prestigious India Art Fair. Inspired by Picasso and Dali, Samantray’s bright-hued paintings have helped him carve a niche for himself. In 2001, he was awarded by the Government of Odisha on the occasion of World Environment Day. He also received awards from the B.K College of Art & Craft in 1998 and 2001.
